Bringing affordability to the suburbs: A pivotal point in Aeon's history
October 2008

This is a momentous time for Aeon. After historically serving the downtown core area for more than 22 years, Aeon is opening its first suburban property.

Clover Field Marketplace provides 117 apartment homes and 7,000 square feet of neighborhood-scale commercial space in western Chaska. Throughout the development of this mixed-use, mixed-income property, several questions have been asked about Aeon’s geographical expansion.

Why did Aeon expand its efforts to the suburbs?
The need for affordable homes is not solely an urban need. Many lower-income employees in suburban areas find themselves driving 30, 40, or even 50 miles away to find a home they can afford. Affordable homes are needed in all of our communities.

Aeon produces high-quality, sustainable apartment homes. We have the knowledge and capacity to build long-lasting assets for the community. It was logical that Aeon expand its service area to help suburban communities meet their need for affordable options.

Expanding geographically also helps us build a broader base of community support. The decision to geographically expand is a key point in our organizational history.

Why Chaska?
The City of Chaska is visionary and thoughtful in its approach to community.  The city designed the Clover Field development – in which Aeon’s Marketplace development is located – to accommodate diversity of people and types of homes.Clover Field Marketplace is part of Chaska’s vision to help ensure people of all income levels have access to affordable options

in their community.

Affordable places to live are especially important for individuals who work in Chaska, many of whom are driving far outside of the city to find affordability.

For the first time in history, some people are paying more on transportation than on their housing – making affordable places like Clover Field Marketplace even more important. Nurses at Ridgeview Medical Center and workers at nearby small manufacturing companies were among the first to call Clover Field Marketplace their home.

Does Aeon have plans to expand to other suburbs?
Yes, Aeon looks forward to being a positive tool to meet the affordable housing needs of other suburban communities.

Currently, Aeon owns Har Mar Apartments in Roseville.  To improve the property’s future viability, Aeon plans to substantially rehabilitate the site's existing 120 units and construct an additional 50 apartment homes. Our efforts at Har Mar will preserve existing affordable apartments and do so in a quality, sustainable way that creates a long-term community asset.

Our goal is not to build just one development in any suburban community, but to be a longer-term partner to help meet their needs for high-quality affordable apartment homes.

Please join me for the grand opening of Clover Field Marketplace from 4 – 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29. Help Aeon celebrate what we anticipate to be the first of many suburban developments!
