Eddie’s story of losing and finding Home

It’s easy to take Home for granted when you’ve never experienced life without one. For Eddie, losing his home taught him just how easy it can be to fall on hard times. He also gained perspective on how different this time of year is when you’re searching for a warm bed to sleep in each night instead of celebrating the season with friends and family. This is his story:

When my friend suggested moving to Minneapolis over 20 years ago, I was hesitant, but it wasn’t long before I fell in love with this city. I decided to put roots down, and I went to North Hennepin Community College and took some classes at Minneapolis Community College. I graduated with an AA degree in law enforcement and spent the next 18 years as a state trooper. At the time, it seemed like I had it all: a good education, a steady job and place to come home to every night.

But then my mom’s health started to go downhill. So I quit my job and moved back home to Chicago to take care of her. When I returned, I found myself in a very different situation — I had no job, no home and all of a sudden, I didn’t know who I was.

I fell on hard times looking for a place to live, but I was determined not to let friends know my whole situation. I didn’t want them to think poorly of me. I didn’t want to make a career of being homeless.

Aeon gave me a chance and the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself. Today I have a place to come home to every night. I’m feeling especially grateful for this gift during the holiday season, because when you get your own place, you can actually enjoy this time of year. The holidays mean something different to you when you have a Home. You can gather with friends and family to celebrate, instead of spending your days thinking about where you’ll sleep next. You’re no longer out on the streets, carrying belongings in a bag. I’m even thankful for little conveniences that most people take for granted — having access to clean water and a bathroom, for example. Most people never stop to think how different the holidays would look if they didn’t have a home.

Home is a place of peace for me, and I hope more Minnesotans who have fallen on hard times are given a chance, too. Thank you for letting me share my story.
